Woe, woe and thrice woe!

Post by Sunfly » Tue Feb 08, 2022 12:22 am

Got a serious leak I'm afraid. Its either the windscreen or the sunroof, but the sunroof drains freely so I'm going for the screen mastic seal. When I got in it after about 4 weeks of Dec/Jan, there were beads of water full height on the inside of the screen on the drivers side and to my amazement, pools of water in the roof lining.

I've arranged with Autoglaze, Gloucester (not Autoglass, who would only do a screen renewal) to remove, reseal and refit the old screen which is only 6 years old. Even if I'm wrong and its not the screen, I'm going to have it done anyway as its never been right to the point where the original Orangutan who fitted it, got it so skewed that the seal wouldn't fit. He palmed me off with a bit of tractor seal and a fairy story about the replacement OEM seal being too stiff :? .

The interesting thing about this story is that the very nice lady at Auto Glaze said, "Have you got a spare screen just in case?" I said no, so I want your best man on the job, not some spotty lad on work experience!"

She said, "It might be best if we can get a spare if we need one" I said "they're as rare as hens teeth!" She said, "I'll call you back" She did and she said she could get one no probs. I said, that's good, there's not many about". She said, "We have resources you do not have access to!"

I thought that might be interesting to know next time anyone needs a screen. I will let you know what sort of job they do of it.

Interesting…. Offer to buy the new one - assuming the old one remains intact

Watering can, a bit of Fluorine dye and a UV light source should be enough to see whether it is the windscreen or sunroof / drain leaking.
Water in the head-lining is a worry.
Hope you get it sorted Bob.

My money is on a split hose/disconnected hose to the sunroof tray

I've got the watering can, John but I'm short on the Fluorine dye and the UV light. What's more I wont be getting them any time soon either, as I'm self isolating with Covid. What's more I gave it to six people in the office all in the same day so I'm not very popular.

But like I said John, that screens coming out, come what may, because its time that screen and the seal were put right. Better not to have moisture behind the seal if it can be avoided.

Incidentally... and I'm going to have a moan now so be prepared... myself and six other people are all off potentially for ten days (its been seven now for me and I'm still positive), and all for a winter virus that''s much milder than your average cold thanks to Omicron taking over. No doubt its still potentially serious for the unvaccinated but that's their look out. Track and trace told me that T and T has now become a waste of time as its so virulent everyone is bound to get it and they are just going through the motions. Time to get back to work and stop spending the treasury on a useless waste of time.

I do have that as plan B, Duncan but it does drain very freely.

Bugger, why didn't I think of that   For that matter, why didn't John think of it :o
Denso Tape would be absolutely ideal. The only drawback I see is that insects and possibly pedestrians, (or better still cyclists who hog the centre of the road) might get irremovably stuck to it. Never mind, it would only takes seconds to renew your Denso tape windscreen repair for many more mile of rain ingress free, motoring.
