My Probe 2.5 24v 1996 is rough idling but smooths out when driving. HT leads were changed about six months ago. Is it possibly the distributor? It’s quite old now. Or possibly a vacuum leak? Any advice is appreciated.

How is the water level when cold and looking at the filler on the engine?
The TPS might need some adjustment, or the idle.

Water level is good.
No poor acceleration: The car does not hesitate or jerks when I press the accelerator. No stalling. The car does not unexpectedly shut off while driving or stopping. Just rough idling and a slight thud sound. The rev counter does not deviate much at all only slightly on occasions.

You're not putting E10 fuel in her? Mine got lumpy idle the only time I used it. I always use the expensive stuff now.

No. Shell V Power.

It could be a split in the elbow between the VAF and IM, or a pipe has come off at the back of the air box.
Is your car a standard set up, have you changed anything recently?
Do you have any oil in the plug wells
Where are you based

Standard set up. Located in Gosport Hampshire. Not changed anything. Have a small rocker cover oil leak.

Have you checked all of your pipes etc?
When you say the water is ok, is it full to the brim when you remove the cap on the engine, with it not running and the engine is cold?

Have you checked for any fault codes

Pipes ok. As far as I can tell. Water is full to the brim. Not checked fault codes as that is beyond me. I could share a video.
Will do later. Car going in for service tomorrow, and exploration of this issue. Might know more then.

Looks like I might need new piston rings two at least. Anyone have any?
