Couple of questions

Is it just the S1 dizzy that suffers failure or can it happen to the S3 as well?
Also, is there any way to tell which brand of moby is fitted without actually removing it (i.e VIN number, manufacture date etc)?
Cheers for any advice

there were only 2 makes of moby as far as I'm aware, the Bosch one is fitted to early cars, which came with a fob, which you press to disarm the moby, or the Temic one on later cars, which has a chipped key, you just have to insert your key and start it up.

I'm no expert, but I believe that the S1 is associated with the Bosch and the S3 the Temic, it's the Bosch that causes the problems, which leads me to believe that the S3 would be fine, but not infallible (a bit like myself  )

What Trevor said is correct
S1 distributor has the bosch immobiliser fitted
S3 distributor has the temic immobiliser fitted

Thank you both!
I have an S3 on mine and the moby hasn't been bypassed so was wondering whether I need to do it or not.

Hi, could anyone show me a picture of the different keys as I have a 95 build 2.0 and just had an S1 distributor replaced, I've not got a fob , just 1 key but want to get another cut but don't know if it's temic or the immobiliser has been bypassed, cheers

can you post a picture of your key that you do have, both sides. From that we can tell if it's an aftermarket one, a chipped key or not, but if you Have a S1 dizzy, than it's probabaly an early car, so no chipped key. If that is the case and your car was running until the dizzy failure, then all you will need is a replacement key.

Pictures will help, just add via the add image to post at the bottom of where you write your response.

Here is a picture of a temic key, hope you can see the outline on the key for the chip
S1 Keys don't have the chip
