Oil leaks
Oil leaks
Ford Probe
2.5 24v
1996
Laser Red
Leather upholstery
I’ve noticed that there are three oil patches on my garage floor.
Never had this before. Patches not massive but noticeable. Car is used about once a month at this time of year doing about 15 miles at a time. Seems like the oil is coming from different locations but fairly close to each other. Recently I topped the oil up and the level is quite high on the dipstick. Never over filled it before. Would this cause the oil leaks?

Re: Oil leaks
Hi
The oil patches are as you look at the car looking towards the windscreen they are to the left of the engine. There is also a slight leak directly underneath the engine so it seems. Possible from the oil sump.

Re: Oil leaks
Have you noticed a smell of burning oil or any visible deposits of oil anywhere?
Have you changed the oil recently and maybe the sump plug isn’t quite tight enough?

Re: Oil leaks
No smell of burning and the car is running well. The only thing is that the oil level is rather high after I topped it up.

Re: Oil leaks
I would look at trying to clean the areas where you think it might be coming from and then after a run or not see if it’s dripping anywhere. If it does it even without you using the car, it’s probably not the rocker cover gasket, but as you say something underneath or mane the oil filter isn’t tight enough?

One last thing !
Careful around tightening that sump plug, everyone .
The Probe sump is not much thicker than a soup tin and corrosion around the sump plug can cause a leak from what appears like a rust patch.
Overtightening the plug will finish it off.

Re: Oil leaks
I'm with John, be careful when tightening up sump plugs, plus watch out for rust on the sump, don't rub it while sump is full, once I accidentally knock rust on a sump and oh dear I had a nice leak pouring from the sump.
Jack your car up and check around the sump, plus have a look at the power steering bracket, if oil is dripping from the adjusting point, will will be the rear rocker cover corner starting to leak
