ABS Sensor Problem ( Front Left )

Hi everyone,

We've got code 12 - Front left ABS Sensor.

Tested voltage and resistance at sensor and control module all is fine, even stripped the brakes and made sure everything moving beautifully, but it seems to activate a code when we lock the steering wheel one way or the other (although this could be a coincidence). Seems OK when we drive in a straight line, but hard to test because no MOT due to this problem and so can't drive far.

Right now we are assuming there is a fault in the wire and not the sensor head by the wheel.

Although there is a small dent in the head.

So it seems we have 2 options with the sensor:

Repair it (change the wire)
Replace it

It seems hard to source a replacement - anyone any ideas where we might get one?

Or, how can we change the wire - we've read in the forum you can twist in a new cable - is there a method to this, does it work, what cable do we need to use.

Or could it be something else? We replaced the module recently. Checked all wiring OK back to the module. Just seems to be an intermittent fault as we drive.

Thanks for any advice you can help us with this!

Cheers,

Ron

Have you tried RockAuto, they might have new ones, but make sure you don’t get your left’s and right’s mixed up with them being in the US?

Thanks for this.
Is that Rockauto.com? Nothing listed on there. Might try to contact direct.
I assume that the Left sensor is still on the left side (as if viewed from sitting inside the car) whether it's the passenger or driver side - am I right? :?

The intermittent fault as you drive may be a broken connection somewhere along the wire.
IF you have a digital voltmeter you could try putting a bent 90deg nail in your electric drill , connect voltmeter to the two wires set to lowest voltage,
start drill and try to get the nail head skimming close to the sensor head.
You should see some voltage registered on the meter.
Now you have to pull/tug the wire to see if it loses connection.

Hey thanks for this idea! We tried it out today.

The current front left sensor didn't lose connection but there was a small amount of voltage variability on bending/stretching the wire. Maybe that's enough to make it trip a code. An old rear sensor we found stayed pretty steady. Hoping this is the problem. Sourcing a replacement ...
