Simon, can I trial your alpines please? The spare I had I think was a spare for a reason. Works better, a lot better than my failed unit but still not quite right . Thank you

you can, having investigated a bit there doesn't seem much to go wrong, its not like your usual "hot wire MAF, in fact the MX6 website refuses to call it a MAF, rather a VAF.
just give me a yell and we can trial the Alpine one or even the LHD which I know to be good.

As said before maf/vaf do cause problems just leave the plug off and see wot happens 
most problems are caused by pulling the wiring and not using the connector clip
