Cambelt Pullys 24V

Hi Everyone,
Has anyone ever experienced a garage wanting to change all cambelt pulleys along with the belt as a matter of rountine? The car has only done 19K, but even so, I've never heard mechanics say this without even seeing the car!

No, and if you agree to them doing it , demand that they give you the original ones back.
You will need them to replace the ones they fitted.

Good practice, to replace them.
Especially if you don’t know the history of the car.
Or if they are noisy .

In your case, with only 19K miles

As( Said) depends if you have history of the cambelt/change etc i would also do the water
pump and hydraulic tensioner If never been done

Why are you having all this work done at 19k miles ?
What makes you think 'something' will go wrong if you don't have it done ?
I can assure you the original cambelt will last for well over 100.000 miles without a problem , stability of the polymers too. indefinite.
The carbon fibre in the Denso belt will not be affected by time.
Other belts are cheaper , ask yourself why ?
As for water pump , that will depend on previous owners care in using the right 'stuff' over the years.
Tensioner ? Out of anyones control , just down to luck if it goes wrong.
As said , keep everything you change , you may need it again.

If its a Oem water pump its been there years if no history,same for the hydraulic tensioner
all under load,and the pump rotting away the fins, would be good to get just them done
with the belt but your call,as the engine will be apart on the side if you not doing it

You probabaly won't save yourself much money by not having them done, but your piece of mind will improve. Swapping out the pullies (assuming we are only talking about the actual timing belt pullies and not the ones for the waterpump, alternator and steering pump, as they shouldn't need to be replaced) should only take about 10 mins and the water pump not much more.

Thanks Guys.
It was the difference between a £500 job and a £1300 one. Had the belt done as it's been done religiously every 5 years since new (4K per belt, boo hoo). Will get the idler pulleys, pump, etc done nearer 60K which is when they would have been done with normal usage. The garage seemed to think that was a plan.

Did you have the water pump changed too?
£800 extra just for the pulleys seem an awful lot, as the cambelt pulleys are like £20-30.

I think for clarity we need to understand what pulleys you actually mean, are they just the cambelt pulleys, or do they also mean the camshaft wheels and the auxiliary wheels, neither of which I have ever known anyone change.

If it’s just the cambelt pulleys, next time prime the car to me and I’ll do it for £1000

guess most of that was labour how much did they charge for the cambelt
