Save us the old shaft, I’ll put the above on it + inspect & re-grease the Inner CV joint. It will be as good as new

Agreed Bob but I bought and fitted one of those items , absolutely no problems for 60k + miles.
When you really analyse a CV joint there isn't a lot of movement between parts anywhere , very clever device.
Certainly wouldn't want to make one to sell for £35 as a living.

Quite so, John, all down to materials and heat treatment; unfortunately there are savings to be made in both, but 60k is at least respectable. I think M939FDF got through to 120k before I had to change the half shafts and the second pair were still going strong at 285k, but the change wasn't for the CV joints, it was for the nearside gearbox spline which was badly worn. (Gearbox was OK though) That, apparently, was a very unusual fault. I think the bill was about £1200 so there is a price to pay for OEM. (inc labour). No doubt I was ripped off by Bristol Street Motors as per their customer service policy.

Mazda wanted £700 to change the front and rear discs+pads, tiniest ridge on front , rear a bit rusty looking at 37k miles on a 13 reg. 6.

OK, had chance to get in the air and remove the wheel. Ran my fingers around the full length of the spring, no obvious signs of a break. Drop link intact. Slight movement on the strut when moving with my hands side to side, I'd say 2 or 3mm. Is that normal?
Doused top of strut bearing and drop link with WD, no difference, clunking still there on low speed manoeuvre.

You don't need the replace the strut top mount, you just need to replace the bearing, if that's the problem

Ebay no 154464340807 for bearings
154483590521 for mounts
Check the nuts on the top mounts as you
may have some that are Knackered as the bolts
are pushed into the mount
