Malcolm,
do you have more than one fob? If you do have you tried both?
Can you follow any of the wires back from the black box to a fuse and if you can, can you check it?
Can you see where any of the other wires go to?

Auto electrician turned up,, problem is not the immobiliser, main fuse 80amp, had a very small crack in it, he put a very small of solder on it, and all electrics working again.
Traced the fault to the alternator, sparks coming from it when we started to car. Quickly shut it down,
Need a new alternator and belt
Plus new 80amp fuse

Update, alternator ordered from Rockauto's,, should be here for Monday
80amp fuses Friday,
New belt tomorrow.
Start removing old alternator Friday, (bitch of a job apparently) got to remove the passenger halfshaft
to drop it down and out. Not looking forward to the job, but it has to be done

Think that would be impossible to find a blue colour blank, with in been a very early on 1988, on later one's that area is for the ride control unit, (soft, med or hard ride), or the powered mirrors or is it powered windows, something like that.
Once it's taken of the road I may try and get the immobiliser bypassed, and just leave that bit in position? We will see how things go
